Social Responsibility

A note from Decinda…

“Here are the values that I stand for:  honesty, equality, kindness, compassion, treating people the way we want to be treated and helping those in need.  To me, those are traditional values”

– Ellen DeGeneres

When I first read this quote, I wished they were my words.  This short paragraph sums up everything I know to be true and how I live my life, so succinctly and perfectly.

Event Society is an extension of who I am, which means we are heart-centred, compassionate and we do our best to make people happy.  I think the world needs more of this, more love and empathy and seeing the humanity behind the business we do each day.

As I write this, I’m unsure what the BIG PLAN / CAREER DEFINING moment is for Event Society.  I have considered that it is to fund large-scale charity events that can raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for local Gold Coast and Brisbane charities.  Or maybe it’s to host conferences where we can engage incredible thought leaders of the world to raise the collective consciousness of our city.  Or maybe it is simply to create environments that engage and delight our guests, that elevate ordinary moments and really make them feel something…experiences that bring moments of insight, connection and pride.  Maybe it’s all of these things.

What I do know, is that we start where we’re at, and that means doing what we can right now to make a positive impact in people’s lives, and leave the world a little better after every event.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership. They recognise that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.

Through our work with B1G1, and other special event practices, Event Society is a Leader in our industry for business practices in line with the SDGs.

We’ve officially joined the movement to fight food waste, and partnered with Oz Harvest.  OzHarvest is a food rescue organisation, collecting quality excess food from commercial outlets and delivering it directly to over 1000 charities supporting people in need across Australia. OzHarvest operates nation-wide, collecting literally tonnes of food every week from donors around Australia, and we are thrilled that Event Society can now add to their donor partners. We are starting small, but as our business grows, so will our donations and we believe we can assist this very worthy organisation to make significant impact to Australian families in need.

Flowers make people happy like nothing else quite can. These gifts of the Earth are usually saved for special occasions (like events) so imagine the surprise and delight when they come your way “just because”.

Rather than waste all of the beauty of our incredible event installations, we deliver floral arrangements to our local nursing home after each event. We have received some gorgeous photos of residents re-arranging and admiring them.

In instances that we can’t deliver them, an organisation known as Community Blooms collects them and transforms them into “jars of kindness”. Hundreds of hospital patients have been gifted with incredible arrangements to brighten their day through the work of Community Blooms.

Without sounding trite, we are on the way to “changing the world, one event at a time”. This is never more true than with our support of fundraising events for local charities.

We have a chart in our office that tracks our progress to raise $1,000,000.00 for charity, and we slowly chip away. So far we have raised over $14,000.00 for Queensland Cancer Council, $9,000.00 for RizeUp Australia, as well as donating services and goods to worthy organisations such as Make-A-Wish and the Starlight Foundations.

We are constantly asked to support various charity events, and all of them are considered.

Over the next few years, we have chosen to put our full support behind the Gold Coast Homelessness Network, who do incredible in the community across all walks of life.

If the above resonates with you, we want to partner together, and work as an extension of your team.

I look forward to it.
