“Unexpected kindness is the most powerful, least costly and most underrated agent of human change.” Bob Kerrey
Domestic Violence has been a cause we have been passionate about since the 2015
murder of Tara Brown. Although it has been a problem FOREVER, this vicious act of violence was so widely publicised it reached my ears and broke my heart.
Ever since we have campaigned against it, hosting our own fundraising events, supporting refuges through donations of goods and clothing, and giving financially when possible.
So when we heard that Friends with Dignity were looking for a volunteer national event management company, we applied and were thrilled to be successful and join their leadership team.
Awarded 2018 Australian Charity of the Year, Friends with Dignity is a national not-for profit charity organisation that provides immediate and practical assistance to families and individuals displaced by Domestic and Family Violence.
Built on the foundation that change is affected through community engagement, events are vital to facilitate connection, community and change. Friends with Dignity spreads the message to Step Up, Speak Out and Support.
The organisation receives no government funding, so relies on donations, corporate sponsorship and fundraising to fund their many programs (see more on their website here). They work in partnership with refuge and DV Services to create Sanctuaries for people who have escaped domestic violence and are ready to leave refuges. Sanctuaries are fully furnished with donated goods with the primary goal being to create a safe and welcoming home for survivors and their children.
Our first events for Friends with Dignity were the annual High Tea with Friends held in May in line with Domestic Violence awareness month.
These events were held in Newcastle and then the Gold Coast and welcomed hundreds of supporters and lovers of high tea to Newcastle Event Centre and Southport Sharks respectively.
Our guest speakers included Vanessa Fowler from the Allison Bayden-Clay foundation, Shawn Ross-Smith from DV Connect, Sue and Lloyd Clarke from Small Steps for Hannah and Natalie Hinton from the Tara Brown Foundation. We were also so grateful to our hosts who volunteered their time on the day: Natasha Beyersdorf and Moyra Major.
Friends with Dignity aligns with all of the above organisations, working not in competition with, but alongside them recognising that our mutual goal is to reduce domestic and family violence.
With the Event Society mission to “change the world one event at a time” (check out our social responsibility page here) we were honoured to partner with the 2018 Australian Charity of the Year to plan and manage these events and further the reach of Friends with Dignity.
